The Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute

Leveraging global resources to serve each individual child.

  • Welcome to the Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute

More than 100 years ago, Edward Mead Johnson worked with his family physician to develop a product for his son facing life-threatening feeding difficulties. Today, his quest for better nutrition continues to drive our team to deliver products with an uncompromising commitment to quality and safety. To build on our founder’s vision we have we established the Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute (MJPNI). The MJPNI connects innovative scientific technology and research with cutting-edge manufacturing and quality processes.

We have established a growing global network of Mead Johnson research and development scientists, research laboratories and facilities that put us at the forefront of pediatric nutrition science. Since 2010, we have dedicated four new MJPNI research and development technology centers around the world – in the U.S., Mexico, China and Singapore. Together, these facilities represent an additional $70 million investment above and beyond the company’s ongoing annual investment in research and development. Learn more about our new facilities below.

Evansville, Indiana

Mead Johnson’s Pediatric Nutrition Institute in Evansville, Indiana, opened in late 2010. The $26 million facility is capable of matching manufacturing processes and testing new equipment to make product development more efficient, and increase the speed of bringing innovations to the children who need them. The centerpiece of the 43,000 square-foot facility is a four-story pilot production spray dryer. The dryer allows for faster evaluation of test products.

Mexico City, Mexico

Today, nearly 38 percent of Mexican children below age two are anemic, mainly due to iron deficiency, and 26 percent are overweight or obese. In January 2011, Mead Johnson opened the Pediatric Nutrition Institute technology center in Mexico City to create and communicate science that addresses these and other serious pediatric health concerns. The MJPNI focuses on areas such as neuronutrition, immunutrition, healthy growth and breastfeeding science. The new facility encompasses 17,200 square feet and represents an investment of U.S. $5.8 million, reinforcing our dedication to the children in Latin America.

Guangzhou, China

The first pediatric nutrition-focused research institute of its kind in China, the multi-million dollar Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute (MJPNI) facility is an acknowledgement of both the size and importance of our efforts in China.

Opened in November 2011, the 53,000 square-foot facility includes a technology center, pilot plant and administration building. The technology center has several state-of-the-art laboratories, including sensory evaluation, a chemical test laboratory, product development laboratory, and a shelf stability study center. In addition to conducting innovative new product development, the MJPNI collaborates with research institutions around the world to conduct basic research and clinical studies related to the nutritional status of Chinese infants and children.

Singapore

Mead Johnson's newest Pediatric Nutrition Institute opened in 2014. It houses our first fully functional packaging development laboratory in the region, and only the second in our global network. It is also home to the Interactive Science Gallery, one of only two in the world (the other located at our Institute in Mexico City). The Science Gallery was developed to share our work for infants and children with routine nutritional needs as well as those with special needs, such as children born prematurely, those with allergies, or with rare metabolic disorders. The Gallery also features our latest research in sensory science; findings from our global exploration of human milk; and our ongoing discoveries about the link between nutrition and brain development.
